​The Commission for Electoral Reform in Kosovo starts its work in September

The work of this commission will start with the beginning of the autumn session in the Assembly of Kosovo.

The chairman of the commission, Abelard Tahiri, said that it is important to have a consensus about the issues that this commission will address.

He said that the Central Electoral Commission will also be invited to give their addresses related to the implementation of the law, whether for local or national elections.

“We had a discussion beforehand in the Presidency of the Assembly of Kosovo together with the presidents and members of the presidency, we discussed what our approach will be in this commission, should we go with constitutional changes or should we We address the issues related to the issue of the law itself. We have seen that a process which would require constitutional changes will not be easy, and there we have quite big differences. On the other hand, you know the process of constitutional changes with the issue of the involvement of non-majority communities, the double majority, this made it even more difficult to enter into a process with different constitutions. Therefore, as parliamentary groups, we have agreed to address the issues related to the law on national and local elections”, said Tahiri.

The deputy of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Adnan Rrustemi, said that some internal work deadlines should be defined as well as the topics that will be addressed.

“Intending to address over 35 recommendations given by European Union observers. Since 2017, these recommendations and requests of the EU Office to address them continue to be repeated, either through the mission in Kosovo or through the progress report, but above all, addressing these recommendations is important due to the improvement of process and democracy in Kosovo. There are more than five elections in Kosovo, for all of them there are recommendations, even at one point the EU conditioned the continuation of the election process by addressing these recommendations”, said Rrustemi.

While the deputy of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Avdullah Hoti, said that it is important to include non-parliamentary political parties, civil society and non-majority communities.

“Regarding the work of the commission, I did not say that we deal with work regulations, we are an ad-hoc commission, we implement regulations, but we must work long on the work plan, the determination of deadlines, objectives, the tasks that we share within this commission, and above all, that this is a burden on you, the chairman of the commission, certainly comprehensively, not only of the parliamentary political parties but also of the non-parliamentary political parties and NGOs, the public, how do we communicate, because it is good that we reaches a social consensus on the changes in the legislation that affect the elections, of course a kind of agreement of the non-parliamentary political parties, I believe that this contributes to the preservation of democracy”, said Hoti./KosovaPress
