On Wednesday, Ukrainian intelligence announced that 144 Ukrainian soldiers, including many captured prisoners at the Azovstal steel plant in the port city of Mariupol, had been released in a prisoner exchange with Moscow.
“This is the biggest exchange since the beginning of the Russian occupation of Ukraine. “Of the 144 released, 95 are Azovstal fighters,” said a statement from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s intelligence directorate.
In the post made on the social network “Telegram”, it is not specified when and where the exchange took place or how many Russian prisoners were released as part of the agreement.
He added that 43 of the released soldiers belonged to the Azov regiment, a former paramilitary unit that is now integrated into the Ukrainian army.
Russia considers the unit a neo-Nazi organization and has previously said its soldiers should go to trial.
Moscow and Kiev have exchanged prisoners several times since the February 24 invasion of Russia.
The previous exchange took place on Tuesday, June 28, and involved 17 Ukrainian prisoners.
