Landslides have claimed the lives of at least 42 people so far in Brazil. while hundreds of civil emergency workers are working to evacuate the bodies in the Brazilian city of Petropolis.
The city was hit by massive flooding after heavy rains while rescue teams said the death toll could rise. Rosilene Virgilio, 49, recalled with tears the cries for help of a woman who could not escape.
“Yesterday a woman was screaming for help ‘Get me out of here!’ “But we could not do anything, water was flowing everywhere, mud was flowing everywhere,” he said through tears.
Local firefighters said that 180 soldiers had come to help in the hit city, which in 2011 also suffered a tragedy from the rains.
Officials said 25.8 centimeters of rain had fallen within three hours on Tuesday, almost as much as it had fallen in the last 30 days. Images posted on social media showed cars and houses being pulled from the mud in Petropolis and surrounding areas
