NATO leaders are concerned about the idea that there could be a protracted war in Europe that could not be won.
The conflict in Ukraine has already entered its third month and there are few signs of a decisive military victory by either side, while a diplomatic solution does not appear anywhere on the horizon. The main fear now is that Ukraine could remain a deadly battlefield in Europe and a source of continental and global instability for months, or even years to come.
The most urgent concerns are those of energy and food security, but massive Western support for Ukraine, while the world has not yet recovered from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and is facing the effects of climate change, could further weaken the global economy. If Russia decides to escalate the conflict, the risk of a wider war increases, experts say.
They stress that for Kiev to resist, the flow of supplies must not stop. Neither President Zelensky, who says Ukraine will not only defeat the current Russian aggression, but regain control of Crimea and other areas that Russia has occupied or controlled since 2014, has shown no signs of backing down, while in at this point, it must be very difficult to imagine a negotiated solution to the situation.
