New Australian leader Anthony Albanese has vowed to take the country in a new direction, with a major change in climate policy.
Albanese, who won Saturday ‘s election with the center – left Labor Party, said Australia could become a renewable energy superpower.
“It is an important moment in my life, but I want it to be a great moment for the country. “I want to change the country, I want to change the way politics works in this country, especially in relation to climate change and our commitment to the world on this issue.” tha Albanese.
He will be sworn in as prime minister on Monday, but it is unclear whether his party will have a majority in parliament. Climate change was a major concern for voters after three years of record fires and floods.
Outgoing Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the leader of a ousted Liberal-National coalition, conceded defeat, while suffering deep losses in Western Australia and generally in affluent urban areas.
The vote count is still ongoing and it is unclear whether Labor can get 76 seats to secure a majority in the 151-member lower house of parliament.
The Greens and a group of “independents” who campaigned for integrity, gender equality and climate change policies won support thanks to voter dissatisfaction with climate change following some of the worst floods and wildfires to hit Australia.
The new parliament looks set to be far less skeptical of the climate than the one that backed Mr Morrison’s administration, which was in favor of coal mining.
