Ferit Hoxha, Albania’s Representative to the UN Security Council stressed that Albania comes with strong confidence and determination that the Council should do more, take stronger action and support those in need in every corner of the world.
In the words of Mother Teresa, he said that “together we can do great things.”
Our country received over two-thirds of the vote on June 11 for a two-year term, after 65 years of membership.
The Security Council has 15 members, of which the USA, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and China are 5 permanent members, while the other 10 member countries, one of which is now Albania, have a two-year term.
Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka said earlier that the main priority of the mandate will be lobbying for Kosovo.

As Albania receives membership in the Security Council for the first time, it is a privilege for me as the Permanent Representative of Albania to be present here today and to participate in this ceremony. I am honored to represent my country in this country. Thank you very much
for kind words of welcome. This is a key moment for us; my country, my government, the whole Albanian team and me; a moment that none of us will ever forget. We are here to work with other like-minded countries to be a force for good, to make our voice heard.
In these complex and difficult times for the world, when the things we used to take for granted are no longer safe, the role of the Security Council
becomes even more important. Having a seat at the table puts each seat under a particular spotlight; but it cannot obscure the great responsibility that comes with it. As such, we are determined to play an active and constructive role, to be open, cooperative and persistent, conveying our values and the working principles of the Council.
We will devote our time and effort to promoting the agenda; engage in the protection of human rights and international law; to promote interfaith values and intercultural dialogue for understanding and cooperation as a means of combating hatred, extremism and terrorism. We will pay special attention to issues in our country and the wider European Area and we will do our best to work for environmental and climate security. Albania will also join efforts with all those who aim to make the Council more efficient, more accountable, more transparent and more interactive. Albania stands here ready to strengthen friendships, to build alliances, to establish better ties by working closely with others, for better understanding and cooperation, for peace and security.
Albania believes in multilateralism, international law and a strong foundation of multilateral system rules and values as the cornerstone of world security. Like many others, we know that when the Council stands united, it saves lives, brings change to the world, and helps to define it; as we know that, when divided, it fails to act thus leaving thousands caught in conflict, despair and misery. We come here with strong confidence and determination that the Council needs to do more; take stronger action, supporting those in need in every corner of the world. We believe, as Mother Teresa, the daughter of Albania and the Mother of the world’s poor, said: “Together we can do great things.” Let me close by thanking the delegation for institutionalizing this practice and wishing Norway every possible success with taking over the Presidency in January. Appreciation goes to outgoing members: Estonia, Nigeria, Sant Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam for their outstanding contribution and we welcome Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the UAE on our joint trip to the Security Council.
