Tirana, May 20, 2022-In Albania, the phenomenon of migration has a long and complex history. During the post-communist period, Albania experienced large waves of migration due to economic, social and political factors, first with influxes to the embassies of European countries and later with ships headed mainly to Italy, turning mountainous Albania into a “sea of tears” and the sea in “a mountain of people” as described by a famous song of that period.
Since the beginning of the presence of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Albania, in 1992, the issue of migration has been regularly in the spotlight. The high tendency to migrate, albeit irregularly, still persists and its potential impact is a concern for the future of society.
IOM in Albania, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior and partner institutions, launches an extensive information and awareness campaign to help Albanian citizens and especially young people, to get acquainted with the regular migration routes, but also with opportunities for personal, professional development and economic that the country offers.
The campaign, implemented by IOM in Albania, is part of the project “Raising awareness and information on security and empowerment for all – Albania”, funded by the European Union Fund for Asylum, Migration and Integration and co-financed by the Office of Migration Service Federal Ministry of the Interior of Belgium and the Repatriation and Deportation Service of the Netherlands.
Mrs. Alma Jani, Head of the IOM Office in Albania, states that “the nationwide awareness campaign # AlbaniaJeTi! has been well received so far and has been supported by a wide range of actors at national and local level, including civil society ”.
The main actors in the implementation of this project in Albania include representatives from the government, civil society experts, representatives elected by public institutions at the local level, as well as citizens with experience in migration. Also, a network of 14 “influencers” has been set up in 12 regions of Albania as well as in Belgium and the Netherlands.
“Awareness and information of Albanian citizens about regular migration, coordinating actions with public institutions at central and local level and civil society actors, to meet national and international strategic obligations, is very important,” said the Director General of the Directorate of General Regulatory and Compliance at the Ministry of Interior, Ms. Silvana Banushi.
The main objective of this campaign is to engage all these actors to raise awareness and change perceptions and behaviors on migration, to propose answers to key challenges and current needs, to motivate and encourage groups inclined towards irregular migration to receive taking into account all economic and educational opportunities in Albania, as well as regular migration channels. This campaign will be extended to the main national and local media of the country, as well as social media, to ensure and optimize the national response in addition to supporting the continuous progress of migration management, in line with the objectives of Albania’s membership in the European Union.
