Residents of the Roma and Egyptian community in the area of Selita in Tirana, will have a new formalized market, where they can exercise their activity of selling used clothes. The Municipality of Tirana has handed over the new market premises with about 100 seats for the traders of these communities, who until yesterday were selling on the streets and informally.
The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj was in this new market, where he said that the conditions offered provide families living with this activity not only discipline and dignity, but also optimal conditions for them and the citizens who frequent the market.
“For 30 years, the whole Selita intersection has been a point of sale for used clothes – a non-European image of a city waiting to take the baton of the European Youth Capital. But, we have taken the decision to transfer the market from the Selita roundabout to the Flour Factory, to come further inside the Selita, in a rehabilitated space with lighting, asphalt, signage, where 100 traders will have an environment where they can sell at the counter. This market, which previously operated only on sunny days, will now operate 365 days a year. Therefore, I believe that even for the Roma and Egyptian community, which deals mainly with this type of trade, we have provided a dignified solution, “said Veliaj.
The mayor cited the successful example of the used clothes market in Shkoza, where 110 people involved in collecting recyclable items have become formal traders. “No one interferes out of nowhere. As at the Lake, they did indeed leave, but the families received social housing, and the town gained the Lake Park; as in Shkoza, they left, but the city gained sidewalks, and the market there was functioning for beauty. We will do the same here in Selita – neither food nor clothes on the ground will be sold anymore. “For all these reasons, I will first ask to make the transfer before Christmas, so that everyone has their own space and opportunity to work with dignity, as we have done with the food markets,” he said.
Veliaj said that this solution disciplines the space of everyone in a city where everyone should coexist without harming each other. I understand the hysteria of these fine portals that say, “why did he go out of the way…”, etc., but as long as the municipality has 11 free markets, where anyone can sell as much as they want, when they want, how to want, but not on earth! As long as we have become over 1 million people in Tirana, we will have to coexist. But how can we coexist by eating, drinking, dressing, learning, walking and playing in the same place ?! Jo! Everyone’s space must be respected. “Sidewalks are for walking, the market is for selling, the school is for learning, the square is for playing,” he added.
The Mayor underlined that the lot has already been drawn for the places in the market, according to the same practice followed by the Municipality for the families that benefit from apartments in the palaces of the two new neighborhoods reconstructed after the earthquake in Tirana. “We have drawn lots – so all 100 traders have chosen by lot the number of the stall that belongs to them, so that no one has any complaints, just as we draw lots for social housing and reconstruction housing. I believe that we give an answer where the city is modernized and all that space is rehabilitated, it becomes a flower garden, but of course the Roma community is respected, “declared Veliaj.
