Authorities in the Chinese capital, Beijing, on Monday stepped up efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus, following the identification of a new outbreak at a bar known for cheap alcoholic beverages and large crowds.
The new outbreak of at least 200 drug-related cases – which reopened last week following pandemic restrictions – shows how difficult it will be for China to implement its “zero-case COVID” policy, as part of most of the world is trying to get used to living with the virus.
Chaoyang, Beijing’s largest region – where the grass is located – began mass testing of 3.5 million people on Monday.
So far 10,000 close contacts have been identified who have been put in isolation.
According to witnesses, large metal barriers were installed in the neighborhoods and health workers were seen disinfecting all premises.
New coronavirus outbreaks are raising concerns about China’s economy and impact on the world.
The country is still recovering from two months of isolation in Shanghai, China’s most commercial city.
