Employees in Belgium will soon be able to choose whether they want to work four days a week, thanks to a series of recently announced labor market reforms.
The reform package, agreed to by the country’s multi-party governing coalition, will also give workers the right to turn off their work phones and ignore related messages after office hours, without fear of retaliation from executives.
“We experienced two very difficult years. With this deal, we set a torch for an economy that is more innovative, sustainable and digital. “The goal is to be able to make people and businesses even stronger,” said Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo.
There is also a stronger legal protection for employees under the new rules, while those who will be working full time will be given the opportunity of more flexible hours on demand.
The return of this reform to the law can take several months, as the draft must pass many times into the hands of federal lawmakers before it can be passed.
A significant part of the new labor reforms in Belgium is thought to affect the work-life balance of employees in both the public and private sectors.
