The United States will impose new sanctions on Russian oligarchs, the White House said Thursday, calling them “Putin’s friends” in a recent attempt to pressure the Kremlin to halt its occupation of Ukraine.
The sanctions will align with previous EU measures against Russia’s richest figures and extend them to include a travel ban to the United States and also prevent oligarchs from transferring their assets to family members.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said: We look at one of the key factors, which is certainly the proximity of these figures to President Putin. We want him to feel the tightness. We want people around him to feel the tightness. Our goal and President Biden’s goal has been to maximize the impact on President Putin and Russia by minimizing the impact on us and our allies and partners.
Psaki also said that so far the US has no plans for a meeting or phone call between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
