“Any provocation or aggression against Ukraine would have serious consequences,” said European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.
He made the message to Moscow ahead of meetings with Ukrainian officials on January 5.
“The European Union is Ukraine’s closest partner and we fully support Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” the EU diplomat said in an interview with the Polish news agency PAP.
During his visit, Borrell will meet with Ukrainian officials, including Foreign Minister Dmyto Kuleba in Kiev.
Borrell’s visit is part of international efforts to reduce tensions on the Ukrainian border.
For weeks, the West has been worried about reports that Russia has deployed tens of thousands of troops in areas not far from Ukraine, fueling fears of Russian occupation.
Russia denies the allegations and accuses Ukraine of sending more troops to eastern areas controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
These developments are reminiscent of the events of 2014, when Russia annexed the Ukrainian Crimean Peninsula and began supporting separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Talks between the United States and Russia will be held next week in Geneva.
Russia and NATO have also scheduled separate meetings on January 12.
