Ukraine’s foreign and energy ministries expressed deep disappointment over Canada’s decision to hand over a gas turbine needed for the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany.
Earlier, Russia’s Gazprom announced that it had reduced the pipeline’s capacity to just 40% of its usual level, citing the delayed return of Germany’s Siemens Energy turbine, which was being repaired by the Canadians, but due to sanctions imposed on Moscow, it was said that she would not go to Germany.
Canada appears to have decided otherwise, which was hailed by Siemens as a necessary first step towards unblocking the situation. “Currently, our experts are working intensively on further logistics,” the company said in a statement.
Siemens Energy in a statement. “German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was breathing freely that Canada had cleared the way for the delivery of the turbine. This whole situation has highlighted the unintended consequences of Western sanctions against Russia in response to the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
It is said that under the compromise, the turbine would be sent to Germany first, so Canada does not violate any sanctions. Germany will then deliver the turbine to Russia. Kiev, however, called on the Canadian side to reverse its decision and not to cater to Moscow’s whims.
As of today, the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline is closed to start the works. Whether after 14 days of works, gas will continue to flow towards Germany is not known. “If the turbine comes, this allows an increase in the amount”, says the Kremlin, which officially emphasizes that Russia does not use gas as a tool of political pressure.
