Police in northern Macedonia have arrested the government’s secretary general, Muhamed Zeqiri, on charges of corruption and abuse of office.
Zeqiri was given a 30-day detention by the neighboring state court. The Prosecution suspects that the Secretary General of the Government in the period from April 2021 to January 2022, has entered into a contract for consulting services with a company with a total value of about 941, 985 euros, which is about 147,000 more than the planned amount, without public procurement procedure.
The court imposed the detention measure because, according to her, “there is a risk of escape, disappearance of traces or the influence of witnesses, as well as the risk that he will repeat the crime.”
Following the announcement of the prosecution to open the investigation, Zeqiri resigned irrevocably from the post of Secretary General. In the published announcement, he said he is confident he will prove his innocence. Zeqiri has held this position since November 2020.
