A couple accused of having an extramarital affair were tied to an electric pole and beaten for hours by locals in Karnataka, southern India.
The woman, who had been separated from her husband for several years, had invited the accused home when her ex-husband and brother entered the house and forced her out to give her the “deserved punishment”.
Torture and public humiliation was filmed in Mysuru district, Karnataka, at the end of last month and has spread widely in the country shocking viewers.
It shows a man and a woman tied to an electric pole in the dark, as the crowd gathers around them and starts hitting them for punishment or for fun.
The woman is seen shaking and unable to move as she is tied with rope by volunteers.
After they were tied up, the couple was physically abused and all passers-by joined them after asking the audience what had happened.
The network India Today wrote that the woman has three children from a previous marriage and in recent years has lived with the parents’s family.
The 30-year-old had spent the evening with her 24-year-old son from a neighboring village when they were interrupted by a raid on the home of her ex-husband and brother.
The two men had forced the couple out of the house and as they tied them to the electric pole, they told the villagers that they had been caught committing “adultery.
The villagers then gather around the bound duo and no one helps them despite their cries for help.
Only a few hours later when it was learned that the detainees had not committed treason or shameful acts the villagers intervened to free them.
The old village leaders would gather a day later to discuss whether there were major moral violations.
Local police said they were also investigating.
