The UK government has reacted to the death sentence handed down to two British nationals, Aiden Aslin, 28, and Shaun Pinner, 48, who were fighting on the Ukrainian war front.
The prime minister’s spokesman said in a statement that Britain was concerned about the decision and recalled that it had been repeatedly said that prisoners of war should not be used for political purposes.
“We are definitely deeply concerned about this. We have consistently said that prisoners of war should not be exploited for political purposes. You will know that under the Geneva Convention, prisoners of war have the right to combat immunity and they should not be prosecuted for participating in hostilities. “So we will continue to work with the Ukrainian authorities to secure the release of any British nationals serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces who are being held as prisoners of war.”He said.
On the other hand, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said that she “fully condemned” the British sentence.
“They are prisoners of war,” he said. This is a false judgment without any legitimacy. My condolences are with the families. “We continue to do everything we can to support them.”
In February, Ms Truss said she supported individuals from the UK who wanted to go to Ukraine to fight and said it was up to the people to make their own decisions. The two convicted persons have one month to appeal the decision against them.
