Albania has infinitely honest individuals worthy of becoming president. The potential candidate is from the right, the left or out of politics, accomplished professionals.
Such is General Bajram Begaj. A wise man who has stood out for his professionalism and dedication to the tasks he has held. Doctor, Associate Professor. An ambitious man who has climbed the career ladder. A general who has known how to maintain and respect relations with international partners.
In this regard, placing a military-trained president at the helm of the Presidency is important. The Head of State is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and receives any information regarding the Armed Forces. Recall that we are living in a time when Russia for more than three months attacks every day barbarically to invade Ukraine. The Balkans still remain a “powder keg”.
Meanwhile, the United States of America and NATO give a special importance to Albania where the NATO military base is being built in Kuçova. This forces us to be serious and trusting with our partners. The President also plays a role in this relationship as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
But this majority tarnishes the name of the General. The Socialist Party did not respect the agreement reached in the eyes of all Albanians to have a consensual candidate. The President according to the Constitution is the representative of the unity of the people and stands above the political parties. It is therefore imperative that the head of state be consensual.
The majority, which is accustomed to occupying all powers, refused to have a joint proposal.
The general will have my respect, maybe the whole opposition, but we can not legitimize the authoritarian behavior of this majority.
