SpaceX, Elon Musk’s US space company, has sent some devices to Ukraine to connect to Starlink, with the aim of providing satellite internet access.
The company did not provide many other details, but intends that through this line Ukraine will be able to communicate via the Internet even in cases where its service is limited due to damage to traditional lines.
On February 26, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov wrote on Twitter, asking Musk for help: As you try to colonize Mars, Russia is trying to invade Ukraine. As your rockets successfully land on Earth from space, Russian rockets attack the Ukrainian population. We ask for your help to supply Starlink terminals in Ukraine.
Musk then responded to Fodorov, telling him that Starlink was active and accessible in Ukraine and that several new terminals would be sent to provide Internet access.
A few days later, Fedorov posted on Twitter a photo showing a truck loaded with Starlink terminals, several packages that include an antenna and some kind of router. It is unclear how many devices were sent by SpaceX, but neither how they will be used by the government or people of Ukraine.
As a communications engineer from Kiev reported on the technology site The Verge, until a few days ago Starlink could not be used by Ukraine. The system is actually still in development and is not present in all geographical areas, as it requires several receiving stations on the ground to operate. Following the request of the Ukrainian government and the fear of possible internet interruptions, it seems that SpaceX has accelerated the process of activating the service in Ukraine.
Starlink is one of SpaceX’s most ambitious projects and according to Musk it could also become one of his space company’s most profitable businesses. The plan envisions bringing thousands of tiny satellites into orbit near Earth in order to create a constellation that always ensures the presence of at least one satellite over the part of the territory in which you are located.

Through a special system, which consists of a modem and a small satellite antenna, you can connect to the Internet without having to connect at all through a cable or mobile network.
So far, SpaceX has sent about 2,000 satellites into orbit for Starlink, but within a few years it aims to lead several thousand more, creating more stable and faster connections. The company has stated that it has at least 145 thousand active users and in recent months has increased the production of terminals.
In recent days, Russian attacks have damaged many sectors in Ukraine, including telecommunications. On Tuesday, March 1, an attack severely damaged the main antenna for the transmission of the TV signal in Kiev, also killing five people.
Further attacks on traffic lines can make mobile networks and Internet connections unusable. However, thanks to him, from the first day of the attack in Ukraine, the Ukrainian institutions and population have been able to coordinate their military and defense activities, but also have shown the world through videos and photos what is really happening there.
A solution like that of Starlink can create constant access to communication even in the worst case scenario, despite not being able to completely replace traditional networks, such as cable and cellular ones.
