The EU has finally paved the way for a sixth package of sanctions against Russia. But because of Hungary’s resistance, the EU initially decided not to impose sanctions on the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill. As some diplomats confirmed, the sixth package of EU sanctions, which also includes a broad oil embargo, was approved by representatives of EU countries without the planned sanctions against Cyril.
Other EU countries wanted Cyril to be included in the EU sanctions list because of his support for Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine. He has close contacts with President Vladimir Putin and has so far been very loyal to the Kremlin.
In his sermons, the 75-year-old consistently supported the course of the war and recently even claimed that Russia had never attacked another country. Hungary, however, did not want to accept the sanctions.
The boycott of oil supplies from Russia, which is quite important from an economic point of view, stipulates that next year the EU will no longer allow oil imports by sea. Due to their high level of dependence on Russian oil only Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will be allowed to import Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline until further notice. According to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, by the end of the year the EU will buy about 90 percent less oil from Russia.
US deepens sanctions against Russian elite
The US also imposed further sanctions on Russian oligarchs and government officials. The Treasury Department and the Foreign Ministry in Washington announced a series of punitive measures against those who have close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Among them are billionaire Alexei Mordashov and Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. The U.S. government has also investigated several luxury yachts allegedly owned by Putin or his relatives. The United States has already imposed large-scale sanctions on Moscow and various Putin allies in coordination with international partners.
