US President Joe Biden has spoken with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in his first bilateral meeting with a foreign leader since taking office.
The two leaders outlined common political priorities regarding climate change and China, including the release of two Canadians being held there.
“Human beings are not cards to be exchanged.” tha Biden. The two countries also pledged to work towards achieving climate targets by 2050.
Canada is often the destination of choice for an American president’s first foreign trip, but Covid 19 has influenced Biden’s plans. Instead of physical travel, the meeting was held at a distance. Democrat Biden hopes to renew his relationship with Trudeau after his predecessor visibly shocked him.
“The United States has no closer and more important friend than Canada. Our two countries share a close geography and a history that will connect us to each other forever. “Trudeau is also committed to working with the United States to overcome the Covid crisis, but also to ensure that both countries occupy their rightful place in the world.”, said Biden.
“We are facing difficult times, and there is no doubt about that. But we are not facing this single crisis. Canada and the US are close allies, most important trading partners and early friends. We are united to defeat this pandemic and build a better tomorrow and I know our bond will become stronger. Leaders did not receive questions from reporters, which is unusual in Washington for bilateral events like this.”, Trudeau.
