German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said Germany should review its vaccination strategy against COVID-19 to treat the Omicron variant and ensure it could develop a new vaccine quickly if faced with a more deadly variant of coronavirus in the future.
Lauterbach, who was appointed health minister last month, made the remarks in an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
“If we are faced with a variant that is just as contagious as Omicron, but significantly more deadly, we should be able to develop and produce a new vaccine in a very short time“, Said Lauterbach, reports the Reuters news agency.
The German government is planning to set up a permanent system to purchase and provide rapid injections, at any time because there could be new serious outbreaks, he said.
“We should not fall into the naive assumption that the pandemic will end soon. It is not over, “said Lauterbach.
Germany closed major vaccination centers in several countries last summer when demand for COVID-19 vaccines fell for a short time before rising again.
