Germany has immediately begun the massive modernization of its armed forces. German arms companies are getting orders: so far, it was one of the largest arms exporters in the world, but in total domestic production, the arms industry had no insignificant weight.
Now, however, the situation is quite different. It is estimated that this year alone, Germany will spend an additional 100 billion euros on defense. After the war in Ukraine, it has decided it seems to be turning into the third world power, after the US and China, for defense investments.
The additional funds this year will be used for the offspring of Tornado aircraft, for transport helicopters and for additional aircraft, the Eurofighter. € 15 billion is earmarked for F-35s and other aircraft, € 5 billion will be provided for new heavy transport helicopters.
Armed drones, corvettes and navy frigates will also be purchased. And strengthening the defense is not aimed at covering only German territory, but the whole of Europe.
The German Foreign Minister announced that Germany will increase its international commitment to peace. Annalena Baerbock presented concrete plans for this.
“The Russian war in Ukraine is a geopolitical turning point with far-reaching effects on European security. “For this reason, when developing a new national security strategy, Germany should not think about security by looking to the past, but to the future.” Annalena Baerbock, German Foreign Minister.
Ukraine’s war shows once again that security depends on NATO’s ability to form alliances, Baerbock said, while calling for Germany to take more responsibility within the military alliance. After Great Britain left the EU, European defense cooperation took more concrete forms. In 2017, Germany and France decided to support the idea of ”European sovereignty” with military cooperation in several areas.
