Russian troops have withdrawn from the strategic Snake Island in Ukraine to show, according to Moscow, that it is not blocking efforts to export agricultural products.
“On June 30, as a sign of goodwill, the Russian armed forces completed their duties on Snake Island and withdrew the garrison stationed there. “This shows the international community that Russia is not obstructing UN efforts to secure a corridor to allow the transport of agricultural products from Ukraine.” said Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov.
Another version of the event gives the Ukrainian side. Kiev claims it was his troops that drove the Russian army out of the island.
“Our armed forces have done a wonderful job.” said Andriy Yermak, head of the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who also posted on TWitter and photos showing smoky smoke in some parts of the Russian-occupied island in the early days of the conflict.
Control of Snake Island, located about 40 kilometers off the coast of Ukraine, enabled the Russians to threaten the sea lanes leading to Odessa, the main port used by Ukraine to transport grain around the world.
The island became a symbol of resistance to Russian occupation after Ukrainian coastguards stationed there refused Russian demands to leave, or would otherwise be killed, in the early days of the war.
In response, a border guard sent a message to the Russian ship, Moscow: “Russian ship, go to hell.”
The ship then bombed the island, and later Moscow itself was hit by two Ukrainian missiles and sank.
