How did this day originate?
March 8 is practically a celebration of the women’s rights movement, the origins of which some find in 1857, when factory workers protested in New York against inhumane working conditions and low wages. Their aggravated situation was further exposed by the tragedy of 1911, when 123 women and girls lost their lives in a fire that broke out in the Triangle Shirtëaist factory. On March 19 of that year, the movement would be marked for the first time by over one million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Women demanded the right to vote and hold a public office.
There were many marches, protests and strikes at that time, but none of them took place on March 8. This date will appear only in 1914 and was probably set that year after it was shot on Sunday, while three years later, Russian women took to the streets on the last Sunday in February, to which, in the Gregorian calendar, it corresponded date March 8, during what would be known as the bread and peace protest. Only in 1975 would the United Nations begin to finally celebrate Women’s Day on this date. For decades, this day continues to be remembered through protests.
