Greece said Monday it has prevented close to 600 migrants from crossing the Aegean Sea and entering its territorial waters from Turkey.
This was the largest group of migrants attempting to enter Greece this year.
A Greek Coast Guard spokesman said five smaller ships and four small boats had set sail off the Turkish coast this morning.
“The Greek patrol was able to quickly locate the ships and inform the Turkish Coast Guard,” a spokesman for the Greek Coast Guard told AFP.
The statement from the Greek Coast Guard said that all boats carrying asylum seekers had returned to Turkish waters.
During this year, over 3,000 asylum seekers arrived in Greece, including over 1,100 last month, according to data from the Greek Ministry of Migration.
Meanwhile, according to statistics published in April, over 2,300 asylum seekers have been settled in the camps of the Greek islands of Lesbos, Samos, Chios, Kos, Leros, all of which are located near Turkey.
Greece has repeatedly accused Turkey of failing to take sufficient action to prevent smugglers from transporting migrants by unsafe boats and boats.
