Viktor Orban, challenges the European Union once again.
The Hungarian Prime Minister said that his country will not support the new package of European Union sanctions against Russia in the form in which it is presented, including the embargo on Russian crude oil imports.
In an interview with Hungarian state radio, Orban said the European Commission proposal would be a “nuclear bomb” fired at the Hungarian economy, adding that Budapest was ready to negotiate if it saw a new proposal, which would suited the interests of Budapest. A few days ago, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, presented the new overwhelming package of sanctions against Russia due to the occupation of Ukraine.
According to this proposal this embargo will enter into force within 6 or 8 months. This means that EU companies will no longer need to import Russian oil in the future. But to give countries time to prepare, there will be deadlines.
Specifically, it is predicted that after 6 months the ban on imports for crude oil will enter into force and after a phase of 8 months the ban on petroleum products. In this context it will play a role whether the supplies come by pipeline or by ship. But for the European bloc’s sixth package of sanctions to take effect, it requires the unanimous approval of the 27 EU states.
