A minister in India who drank a glass of water from a “holy” river to show locals that it was clean was later taken to hospital after falling ill, local media reported.
Bhagwant Mann, chief minister of the Punjab region, was airlifted to New Delhi after drinking contaminated water from the Kali Bein river.
In the footage, Mann is seen taking a glass of water from the dirty river and drinking it quickly, in the video that has gone viral.
A day after drinking the water, he reportedly developed abdominal pain and was admitted to Apollo Indraprastha Hospital in Sarita Vihar.
Doctors said Mann had developed an infection and was being treated by a multidisciplinary team.
According to the daily New Indian Expressthe minister then performed some tests and was released from the hospital.
The reactions were different on the network, where many said that the river water is contaminated with waste, but others defended that the minister’s mild illness showed that his infection did not come from the river water but only from the “fear” of something that would happen.
