In one of the most outrageous episodes against isolation measures in Ireland, protesters in Dublin today hit a police officer with a firecracker in the face, causing law enforcement formations to attack demonstrators with sticks in St Stephen’s Green Central Park.
The protesters found a large presence of officers who did not allow them to enter the city park, which was closed shortly before the planned demonstration at 14.00.
The footage showed protesters gathering on the street at the entrance to the park when one of them points a firecracker from the police line and hits one of them in the face.
‘Gardaí’ officers, as the police force in the country is called, reacted harshly to the attack by advancing on the protesters with rubber truncheons, followed by people falling to the ground and fireworks exploding around them.
Various objects and traffic cones were fired at law enforcement officers as women screamed in panic when police forced demonstrators to retreat.
Gardaí officers were seen beating protesters with sticks and using shepherd dogs to threaten demonstrators.
Authorities said the demonstrators and organizers had declared themselves ‘patriots’ and exploited the fears of society’s poorest people, preaching conspiracy theories about the pandemic.
