The UK’s Armed Forces Secretary, James Heappey, told the BBC this morning that he feared “we are closer than we have been to this continent, close to war for 70 years”.
After the end of World War II in 1945, several pacts were signed to avoid future conflicts on the continent.
But it is important to remember that Europe has experienced periods of war in the last 70 years.
The conflict began in the Balkans in 1991 and lasted for a decade, leading to the break-up of Yugoslavia and including Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Kosovo. These conflicts also included a number of NATO military operations.
There have been other recent conflicts, such as fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region in the South Caucasus.
Russia was also involved in a war with the separatists in two Chechen wars – which ended in 1996 and 2000 – in the North Caucasus region.
