The Japanese government has urged residents of Tokyo and surrounding areas to use less electricity on Monday, as it has been warned there could be shortages as Japan is facing heat waves.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry expects the demand for electricity to be extremely high in the afternoon.
According to the ministry, people should stop unnecessary lights, but to use the air conditioner, to prevent heat attacks.
Japan’s energy sector has struggled following an earthquake in the northeastern region in March, which resulted in the suspension of work at several nuclear power plants.
For weeks now, authorities have warned of an energy crisis as temperatures rise.
Over the weekend, temperatures in central Tokyo reached over 35 degrees Celsius, while the city of Isesaki recorded a record temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius.
This was also the highest temperature ever recorded in Japan, in June.
June marks the beginning of summer in Japan, with temperatures typically below 30 degrees Celsius.
