The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has pledged to offer more military assistance to Ukraine, during a surprise visit to Kiev.
“We are here to give you the strategic sustainability you need.” said Johnson on June 17, ahead of a scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Johnson did not provide details on what help he was talking about.
Kiev has demanded more heavy artillery from the West, including howitzers and missile launchers, saying Russia has far more military equipment.
Ukraine is gradually losing territory in the eastern Donbas region due to heavy Russian armaments, experts have said. However, Ukrainian forces are continuing to put up fierce resistance.
Johnson, who is on a second visit to Kiev since Moscow began invading Ukraine on February 24, said Russian forces were facing heavy casualties.
Johnson’s visit comes a day after the leaders of Germany, France, Italy and Romania visited Kiev as a sign of support for Ukraine.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview in Berlin on June 17 that he was holding an open channel with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war, but warned that Moscow would not be able to dictate the conditions for peace.
He said he would tell Putin he was wrong “if he really thinks he can plunder the land and then hope that times will change and everything will return to normal.” Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
He called the war a “special military operation” to demilitarize Ukraine. The West has responded to Russia by hitting the country’s economy with tough sanctions.
