A French MP has withdrawn from the upcoming parliamentary elections after it was revealed that she has spent thousands of euros of funds on clothes and underwear.
Coralie Dubost reportedly asked her assistants to check on housework and take her clothes out of the dry cleaner.
The 39-year-old would run for parliament with the president’s party Emmanuel Macron until an internal report of the parliamentary oversight agency was suddenly published in the media.
Local media say she had spent more than 2,000 euros on clothing, from money saved for parliamentary services.
Ms Dubost has also spent most of her salary of around 6,000 euros a month on beach trips, according to local media, and even treated her staff with offensive words.
Following the publication of the allegations, the unmarried woman told the network Mediapart“It’s time to retire from politics and dedicate myself to my family. “I have been the target of unjust attacks that have damaged my political group.”
She further justified herself: “I’m stupid, I’m not cunning,” as she suggested that poor counseling by her aides had contributed to the exaggerated costs.
Ms. Dubost was first voted in parliament as the representative of the Herault in the south of France in 2017.
Investigations against her are an embarrassment to the party at a critical time before the start of the campaign.
Although Macron’s party ‘En Marche’ leads in the polls uniting the left can be a tough challenge for him.
While the right of the National Front despite the narrow defeat in the presidential, goes strong in the election.
Marine Le Pen received 41.5% of the vote last month, which is the highest that the radical right in France has ever achieved.
