Images of over 300 civilians killed in the city of Bucha, northwest of Kiev, have shocked the world.
Ukraine and Western countries indicted the Russian military for war crimes, following the discovery of mass graves and executed civilians, prompting action at the International Court of Justice.
“I am just worried. I am 90 years old. “I should not have lived to see this,” said Tamara Havriutina, a Bucha resident, as civilian bodies were seen dead on city streets.
According to Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk 280 bodies were in a mass grave, while some of them appeared to have their legs and arms tied before being shot to death.
“This is genocide,” was a direct statement from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“They want to erase our existence as a nation, but we will not give up.” Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Kuleba called on G7 member states to impose immediate sanctions in response to Russia.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the killings “a major shock” and NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said the violence, unprecedented in Europe for decades, was “terrible” and “absolutely unacceptable”.
Britain, France, Germany, Italy and the European Union have demanded that those responsible be brought before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
European Council President Chalres Michel said evidence was being gathered to bring the war crimes indictment to the International Court of Justice. Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka also reacted to the attack, calling the shocking images “the real face of the Russian criminal regime” and warning of filing a lawsuit as a member of the UN Security Council.
