NATO Patriot surface-to-air missiles arrived at Sliac air base in Slovakia at a time when the North Atlantic Alliance is seeking to strengthen its eastern flank amid Russian aggression in Ukraine.
Slovakia itself has recently provided Ukraine with S-300 anti-aircraft defense systems. For weeks, Ukraine has been praying to the West for more heavy weapons.
Some NATO countries will offer such supplies, but so far it is known that only a small country has provided them. At this point, it is considered that Ukraine’s survival as a sovereign state can be decided in the Donbas – and it depends on what weapons Ukraine will use to confront the Russian occupiers. For this reason, Kiev insists so strongly that its military forces be equipped with heavy weapons, including PzH 200 type tanks, and rocket launchers, as well as warships, military helicopters, fighter jets. Many NATO countries, meanwhile, have sent light weapons, defense equipment or ammunition, but not heavy weapons, because it was seen as a threat to be interpreted by Russia as interference in the war, thereby justifying an attack on NATO.
But now before the big offensive that has started in Donbas it seems that one after another NATO countries are putting aside these concerns. Finally, even the lower house of the reluctant German parliament so far, approved today by an overwhelming majority the call to send heavy weapons to Ukraine. The initiative passed with 586 votes in favor, 100 against and 7 abstentions.
A statement issued in Berlin on Wednesday by the leaders of the parliamentary groups said that this was a signal of responsibility for Ukraine and determination against Russia’s aggression.
