Astronomers have discovered a “really strange” object 4,000 light-years from Earth, according to a study published in the journal Nature, which shows that it disappears from view every minute and emits a giant burst of radio waves three times an hour. .
The mysterious object was first spotted by Curtin University student Tyrone O’Doherty while observing the sky in Western Australia.
““It’s exciting that the source I identified last year turned out to be something so special.” said O’Doherty in a press release. This unidentified pulsating object, which astronomers say is different from anything else they have discovered to date, sends out a massive beam of radiation and every 20 minutes, it becomes one of the brightest in the sky. It also rotates and disappears at two-minute intervals.
It is much smaller than our Sun, but it shines brighter and emits highly polarized radio waves. Such pulses indicate the existence of an “extremely strong” magnetic field, which suggests that it may be consistent with a predicted astrophysical object but that it has never been proven to exist.
