North Korea said on June 17 that hundreds of families have been diagnosed with an unidentified intestinal disease, increasing pressure on the dilapidated health system as countries are already facing the coronavirus pandemic.
Pyongyang announced its first cases of coronavirus last month and activated the “emergency epidemic prevention system” as leader Kim Jong Un took center stage in the government’s efforts to prevent the virus from spreading.
However, COVID-19 spread rapidly to a population of 25 million who is unvaccinated and the state has reported over 4.5 million cases of “fever” and 73 deaths, state media reported.
But this week, state media KCNA reported an “acute enteric epidemic” in Huange province, with Kim urging officials to “bring the epidemic under control as soon as possible.”
The term enteric refers to the gastrointestinal tract.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the North Korean leader, was part of a group of senior officials who personally donated medicine to citizens affected by the disease.
The medicine was distributed to “800 families affected by the acute epidemic,” state media KCNA said on Friday.
According to the data, at least 1,600 people have been infected with the enteric disease.
Reports of the outbreak of the new disease have sparked speculation that it could be cholera or typhoid.
If it is confirmed that it is one of these two diseases, then the situation with food supplies in this country would worsen, as the region where the disease has broken out is one of the main agricultural regions of North Korea.
North Korea is estimated to have one of the worst health care systems in the world.
