Open Balkans will help Albanian agriculture if the Albanian government increases the budget for farmers.
Albanian agricultural products will become competitive in the regional market only if production costs are reduced.
Open Balkans will bring development in the fruit growing sector, but on the other hand it puts at risk livestock.
“Open Balkans will bring disadvantages in agriculture, exactly the advantage we will have in citrus, olive and agro-tourism. The disadvantages of Open Balkan are the advantages they have in capturing the market. We have the disadvantage that many products in agro-processing we do not manage to produce with the standard and quality required for our supermarkets. And this is an advantage for the other party as they will very easily bring the goods that meet the criteria. This is due to the disadvantage we have in technology and in the packaging and processing line. “, said Agim Rrapaj, from the Albanian Agribusiness Council.
Dairy industry buys a liter of milk from Serbia without VAT for 48 lek. While a liter of milk in Albanian farms without VAT is sold for 52 Lekë.
On the other hand, Serbian milk is standardized and pasteurized, for agro-processors this means less technological processes, thus reducing the production costs of products of animal origin.
If domestic livestock is not supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Serbian milk risks dominating the Albanian market.
