At an emergency press conference, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he had spoken to Ukrainian President Zelensky to offer his support to the United Kingdom.
He said that already our worst fears have become a reality and all warnings of a Russian invasion have turned out to be tragically correct.
Russia’s President Putin has started the war in Europe, he says. He said Putin had attacked a friendly country without any credible provocation or justification.
“Bombs have fallen on a completely innocent population. A vast conquest is taking place by land by air and by sea. This is not a remote place of which we know little. Ukraine – the second largest country in Europe – which for decades has enjoyed freedom and democracy. We can not allow that freedom to be extinguished. “We can not and will not look far,” said Johnson.
The UK was one of the first countries in Europe to send defense weapons to help Ukraine, said Boris Johnson.
“Other allies have followed suit and the UK will do more in the coming days. Today, in cooperation with our allies, we will agree on a massive package of economic sanctions designed in time to deter the Russian economy. Europe must also collectively lift its dependence on oil and gas, which has given Putin control of Europe, he says.
Following his televised statement, Johnson described the Russian attack as “Putin’s ugly and barbaric venture,” which “must end in failure.”
He says Putin has brought “a wave of violence” to Ukraine. Addressing the Russians directly, Johnson said he could not believe this was being done “in your name” or that the Russians wanted a “status paria” for their country.
Addressing the Ukrainians directly, Johnson said: “We are with you, we are praying for you and your families.”
He said he knew the flame of freedom would be “lit again” in Ukraine. “I do not believe that the Russian dictator will subjugate the national feeling of the Ukrainians.”
