Poland has begun work on building a wall on the border with Belarus with the aim of preventing the passage of migrants.

It is learned that the wall will be 5.5 meters high and will have a span of 186 km. Its construction will be completed in June.

This decision of the Polish government has raised concerns about respect for human rights and the inability of migrants to seek asylum, but also about the impact it will have on wildlife, especially along the forested border.

“Our goal is to reduce the extent of the damage as much as possible. The felling of trees will be small and the wall will be built along the border road, and contractors will use only existing roads“, Said the spokeswoman of the Border Guard, Anna Mihalska.

Last year, thousands of migrants, mostly from the Middle East, crossed or tried to cross the border from Belarus to Poland.

The West blamed the Belarusian regime for the large influx of migrants, saying it had encouraged migrants to fly to Belarus, with the promise that they would easily cross to EU countries.

Earlier, Poland denounced the migrant crisis as an attack by Belarus and its main ally, Russia. Since then, Belarus has repatriated thousands of migrants to Iraq. In the midst of the crisis, last year, Poland sent thousands of military troops and police to the border to reinforce border patrols.

It also built a wire fence along most of the border, closing the border area to the media and human rights groups. Poland also passed a new law forcing migrants to return to Belarus.

Although the number of attempts to break the border has dropped significantly, there are still some isolated cases to cross, despite the cold weather.

The Border Guard service on Tuesday announced on Twitter that there have been 17 crossings in the last 24 hours.

“A group of 14 people, 11 Iranians, two Lebanese and a Syrian, broke the fence and crossed into Poland“, Said the border guards.

They were arrested along with three other people from Ghana who had crossed into another part of the border.
