Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have spoken in a highly personal interview about discussions within the British royal family about their son’s skin color, the loss of royal protection and other hardships that, according to the Duchess of Sussex, have made her think for ending life.
The interview with Oprah Winfrey, broadcast on March 7 in the United States, a day before the broadcast in Britain, was the first since the couple resigned from royal duties.
Harry, who is sixth in line for the British throne, has said he felt trapped by royal life and spoke of the surprise when his finances and security were cut off last year by the royal family.
Meghan described the moment she was first pregnant with her son Archie, and when Harry was asked by a member of the royal family “how dark” could their son’s color be.
Harry has admitted that he has no close ties to his brother William, who is in line to take the throne after his father, Prince Charles.
He said he felt his family did not support Meghan.
Winfrey at one point asked Meghan about the impact of this situation on her mental health and the pressure she had.
She responded that she had suicidal thoughts and asked for help through the palace’s human resources department, but was told there was nothing they could do.
The positive moment of the interview was when Harry and Meghan indicated that their second child would be a girl.
Winfrey has indicated that the entire interview has not been broadcast and that parts of it could be aired Monday morning on CBS television.
