Thousands of citizens gathered on Thursday night in Podgorica to protest against the signing of an agreement regulating the relations of the Montenegrin state with the Serbian Orthodox Church.
“Signing the agreement is not a solution to the problem, but deepening it. With the proposed agreement, important powers of the state of Montenegro are surrendered and we do not agree with this at all”said the coordinator of the Civic Initiative “21 May”, Aleksandar Sasha Zekovic, before the protesters gathered near the building of the Government of Montenegro.
Protesters held national and European Union flags in their hands, as well as banners saying that the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Dritan Abazović, “will answer for his misdeeds”.
The protest, which was observed by the police, passed peacefully and without incident. The Government hearing on this agreement, known as the Basic Agreement, is scheduled for Friday, July 8.
Thursday’s protest was the third in a row, since the Government of Montenegro published the text of the agreement, days ago.
What is most opposed in the proposal-text of the agreement is the part that recognizes the subjectivity of the Serbian Church in Montenegro six centuries earlier than that of the Church in Serbia.
Parties that participate in the Government of Montenegro or provide it with political support in the Assembly have warned that they may withdraw their support if the deal goes through as it is.
Abazović said that the parties who are dissatisfied with the harmonized text of the Basic Agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church were aware of its content.
The Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Porfirije, has said that the approval of the text of the Basic Agreement can put a “crown” on the normalization of relations between Montenegro and the Serbian Orthodox Church./ Radio Free Europe
