The Russian president explained that his move comes in response to the West’s involvement in the mercenary reconciliation to fight for Ukraine.
Vladimir Putin today ordered Middle East fighters “wanting to support Russia” in the conflict in the separatist regions of Donbas to come to Ukraine.
Speaking at the National Security Council in Moscow, Putin said his decision comes after verifying Western mercenaries in war zones in Ukraine.
“Regarding the gathering of mercenaries from all over the world and sending them to Ukraine, they are not hiding it, so they, the western sponsors of Ukraine, are violating all the norms of international law.”
“If there are people who want to come voluntarily, not for money, to support the people of Donbas, we will go to meet them and help them come to the war zone,” Putin said.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the “rebel republics” had received about 16,000 requests from foreigners to fight alongside them, mostly from the Middle East.
Shoigu also suggested the transfer of weapons seized in the conflict to rebels in separatist regions, and Putin approved.
Russia’s war on Ukraine, launched on February 24, has been met with international outrage, and the EU, the United States and Britain, among others, have imposed harsh financial sanctions on Moscow.
According to UN figures, 549 civilians have been killed and 957 injured since the start of the conflict, but the true figure may be higher.
More than 2 million people have fled Ukraine to neighboring countries, according to the UN refugee agency.
