Russian President Vladimir Putin did not say how he would react if his demands for security guarantees from NATO regarding its eastward expansion were not met.
The answer would depend on “the proposals that our military experts would offer me,” Putin told state television on December 26.
Russia will try to achieve a legally binding result from these negotiations, Putin added.
One week ago, Moscow submitted to NATO and US representatives a draft agreement calling for a halt to NATO expansion to the east. Russia considers this action a threat to its security.
Moscow also demanded assurances that NATO would not accept Ukraine as a member, a request that the military alliance has rejected in the past.
Negotiations between the parties took place in January, Moscow claims, and Putin said Russia expects tangible results.
Reports about Russia’s preparations for a new invasion of Ukraine have caused concern around the world for some time now. Russia has repeatedly denied the allegations, but the European Union and NATO have threatened Moscow with serious consequences in the event of an escalation of the situation.
