Although publicly unknown, the daughters of Russian leader Vladimir Putin have become the subject of Western sanctions for the heinous crimes their father is accused of in Ukraine.
Dr Maria Vorontsova, a 36-year-old geneticist, and Dr Katerina Tikhonova, a 34-year-old dancer turned mathematician, have been blacklisted by the US and Britain for war crimes in Ukraine.
Denial of crimes by their father has done little to save them from sanctions, which include travel bans and asset freezes.
The United States announced yesterday that it was tightening penalties for Russian banks in response to crimes in Ukraine.
Britain has frozen the assets of Russian banks Sberbank and the Credit Bank of Moscow, saying it would ban all Russian energy imports by the end of 2022 in order to “die supplying Putin’s war machine.”
Meanwhile, neither Maria nor Katerina have been officially recognized as the daughters of the Kremlin leader, although this is considered an “open secret”, ie something that is known but no one can talk about it.
Maria, born April 28, 1985, to Putin’s wife, Lyudmila, is an endocrinologist and has a career in medical research.
She is believed to be married to Dutch businessman Jorrit Faassen, with whom she has two children.
While Katerina has turned from a former “rock’n’roll” dancer into a leader of Russian initiatives for artificial intelligence.
Very little is known about the lives of two daughters of the same mother, who are believed to live a life of luxury.
