Some villages in Vlora and Fier woke up today under water, as heavy rains caused the Vjosa River to overflow its banks.
It is reported that around 03:00 in the morning, the river burst the embankment, flooding the houses in the village of Fitore. Large inflows have created an unusual situation in Vlora. The emergency headquarters and the mayor are on the ground, while some families have been evacuated.
The worst situation is in Novosela, where water covered entire houses. Members of a family, along with cattle, stood for several hours on the terrace of the house, until rescue teams evacuated them.
The Vjosa River has swallowed agricultural lands in Fier as well. 20 apartments located near the Vjosa riverbed in Ferras have been flooded.
Heavy rains have caused the river to overflow its banks, while excavators are working on the ground to open the drainage canals.
In Fier, there are also problems with electricity in some villages. It is reported that the Poçemi substation has stopped working since 01:30 in the morning. About 3700 subscribers are currently without electricity, in Hekal, Fratar, Selitë and Kuta.
MP Taulant Ballad and Minister of Agriculture Frida Krifca were on the ground. “The General Directorate of Civil Emergencies has announced two or three days before the anticipated emergency situation. As Çako said, it is the largest inflow in 50 years, even in 2017 when there was a flood, the Mifol bridge was not crossed by the waters. We have a difficult situation, but I wanted to tell you that we hope that in the following hours the water level will drop. We have talked to the army forces and if the water level does not fall, we will make forced evacuations of those people who continue to stay in the apartments“.
Speaking about the cattle that are in danger of drowning, Balla said that with the support of the army forces we will try to get them out of the danger zone.
Balla and Krifca assured the residents that all the protective barriers of the embankment part will be strengthened, in order to avoid further situations. “We are all committed and we will be close to farmers and ranchers,” added the Minister of Agriculture.
FNSH and Delta Force teams are engaged in the field, together with search and rescue equipment.
In all road axes, the Traffic Police has increased its presence, to guide and assist drivers who have difficulty in traffic due to the presence of water on the road or snow in remote areas. General Patrols throughout the territory are on uninterrupted patrol and ready to come to the aid of citizens, in case of need.
Problematic situation due to the rains that continue for several days is present in Himara. Shushica River has completely destroyed the bridge of Kallarat village.
Even in Durrës, the Erzen River has overflowed, flooding the Cham and Erzen neighborhoods of the Sukth Administrative Unit.
Even in Gjepalaj of Shijak there is an exit of Erzeni where so far it is reported that about 15 hectares of agricultural land are under water.
The Minister of Defense says for the media that the situation is emergency in certain areas in the north and south of the country, but the damages due to the investments made in recent years are smaller compared to 2017. The Director General of the National Agency of Civil Defense Haki Çako and the Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response Robert Hysenllari are monitoring the situation on the ground in dangerous areas.
The Minister of Defense, based on the weather forecast from IGJEUM said that it is expected that in the coming hours we will have improvement and especially the withdrawal in the area near the Mifol bridge is expected.
