Dozens of ships wait for days in Romanian Black Sea waters to enter the Sulina canal of the Danube River, through which they can reach Ukraine.
Transport ships are forced to take this alternative voyage after the Russian occupation blocked major ports like that of Odessa and Mikolaiv.
“Since all Ukrainian seaports, Mariupol, Odessa, Mykolaiv are closed, ships are using this and other alternative routes,” said Romanian Captain Mihai Calin.
“Last month there were about 400 vehicles coming and going from the Sulina canal. “If the war does not end soon, we will see maritime transport like never before.”
Even the chief motorcyclist of the vehicle Gabriel Danila says that the work in the canal has increased a lot.
“Sometimes we have to do everything with one load. “We start work at dawn and finish when the sun goes down.”
“Currently it is only this pilot boat that was operating. “We are three crew members: the captain, the motorcyclist and a sailor”, adds Gabriel.
The Sulina Canal has become an important route for the passage of Ukrainian agricultural products to the Black Sea via the Danube River.
For this reason the Romanian canal administrators have temporarily restricted vehicles sailing to other destinations in order to avoid long queues of boats.
