The United Nations World Tourism Agency has voted to suspend Russia over the war that has broken out in Ukraine.
Most of the 160 member countries of the Agency have supported the decision, but the exact number is not known.
The motion required two-thirds of the vote. Prior to the vote on the suspension, Russia had announced that it was leaving the agency.
“The statuses are clear: promoting tourism for peace and universal respect for human rights. “Only member states that respect them can be part of the Agency”, said the General Secretary of this body, Zurab Pololikashvili.
“Actions will always have consequences. Peace is a fundamental human right. Guaranteed for everyone. “Without exceptions”, he said, among other things.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that the decision is politically motivated, therefore Russia considers it illegitimate.
“It is estimated that the vote was motivated by anti-Russian propaganda.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia’s decision to leave the World Tourism Agency would not affect the sector in Russia.
“The tourism sector, especially domestic tourism, will continue to develop. “Opportunities for foreign tourism are also open, depending on the competition situation and quality,” he said.
