Kosovo continues to have problems with its exports of goods to Germany and Switzerland due to barriers that Serbia poses in transit.
Although the countries are both partners in CEFTA, an organization for trade co-operation between countries in Southeast Europe, Serbia continues to ignore documents stamped with Kosovo, which often opens up problems in transporting goods, hurting Kosovar businesses.
The Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade, Rozeta Hajdari has warned addressing these barriers to partners in Brussels, but there is still no decision.
On the other hand, the former Minister of Trade and Industry, Ismet Mulaj has requested immediate actions from the Government of Kosovo to resolve the barriers set by Serbia:
“It is not a problem these days, it is a problem, almost since the independence of Kosovo because Serbia does not recognize the official documentation, because Serbia does not recognize the official documentation of institutions, especially phyto-sanitary, sanitary certificates and other certificates that are with the seals of the Republic of Kosovo.
Any products required by the European Union, automatically write on their ticket the product from which it originates. And Serbia has no problems with these products and in addition to the raw material it receives from Kosovo, regardless of what documentation it has, any other product that is a processed product or a final product that is destined for Serbia or European Union countries have barriers that in a way there is no chance to surpass their businesses and exports to be realized”.
Professor of Economics, Muhamet Sadiku, says that Serbia’s obstacles are unfair, at the moment when they export without barriers to Kosovo:
“Despite clear goals and agreements, Kosovo always continues to face major problems in trade with other countries, especially in the realization of exports through Serbia. Because Serbia is not ready to submit to trade exchange rules. On the other hand, Serbia freely realizes its export to the Kosovo market. Thus, Kosovo continues to be under the influence of asymmetric trade measures and of course these measures taken by Serbia, are a major obstacle to the penetration of Kosovo’s exports to European Union countries.
Days ago, the CEFTA Joint Committee rejected Kosovo’s request to be represented in this agreement without the involvement of UNMIK, reports KosovaPress.
