South African police said today they have made three arrests in connection with the shocking and mysterious deaths of 21 young men at an East London tavern late last month, for which no official cause has yet been released.
In the serious, almost unbelievable event, the victims had died after suddenly losing consciousness, and were found lying on the floor and tables.
The suspects, including the owner of the Enyobeni Tavern, have been detained on charges of serving alcohol to minors.
The 52-year-old owner of the bar goes on trial next week and two of his employees have been given the option of paying a $120 fine for selling alcohol to minors.
Two other arrested persons are aged 33 and 34.
The youngest of the tragic victims was 13 years old, while the oldest was 17 years old, according to Police Minister Bheki Cele.
“The place was full of young people, entry was free … and there was even free alcohol,” said a 16-year-old witness who did not want to be named publicly by the BBC.
“Then they started snapping like flies,” she said, describing the horror of the deaths.
The toxicology report has not yet been completed but experts say the deaths were caused by something people inhaled or ate.
The police said they still remain open-minded and vigilant about the unusual case: “As they said at the beginning, the investigation is a process that must be carried out with extreme caution,” said commissioner Nomthetheleli Mene.
