Spanish health authorities did not hide their concern after the country’s Health and Emergency Center revealed the presence of the new XE variant of the coronavirus.
Such a revelation coincided precisely with Spain’s decision to lift the obligation to wear masks indoors. XE is a new highly contagious variant of Covid and a subvariant of Omicron, which often cannot be detected through Covid-19 tests. Despite its low presence in Spain, the Spanish Ministry of Health warns that according to recent reports from the UK, Covid XE has grown in recent weeks at a higher rate than that of the ‘silent Omicron’ or BA .2.
It is thought that XE may be the most contagious of all the variants. According to the data, it is considered as a recombinant variant, which can occur when a person becomes infected with two or more variants at the same time, causing their genetic material to mix inside the patient’s body.
This new strain was first discovered in the UK on 19 January this year, with more than 600 cases and was later reported by the World Health Organization in early April. However, the WHO stressed that studies are still being conducted on the global spread of the disease in recent weeks due to the lower number of tests.
